USB Speakers & MacBook Pro

iTunes plays music when no external speakers are connected to the computer. However, songs will not start playing when HK's Soundsticks are connected via USB. If I disconnect them, then the songs begin to play, I then re-connect the speakers and they work fine. The next songs will continue playing without me having to repeat the excercise. It only happens when pressing the play button or double clicking on a song to begin plating music. Any sugestions?
