Options for replacing a CD drive?

My 12-inch Powerbook G4 CD/DVD drive just quit (there is a part loose inside such that I can no longer push in a disk). I'm thinking about installing a new drive myself and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with doing this. Is relatively easy to do without doing damage to other portions of the computer innards? Would it be worth it to just fork over the exorbitant amount of money for Apple to do it? (I have yet to ask for a quote...does anyone have a general idea of how much it may be?) I came across the site PowerbookMedic.com that offers replacement parts and a manual for installation. Has anyone tried them for anything?
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Marie

It's bloody difficult. You'll need to set aside 3 - 4 hours at least to disassemble the Powerbook and fit it back together again. It would also be handy to have a team of paramedics on standby, for those moments when you nearly have a heart attack because you thought you broke something. I bought a Super Drive for the Powerbook off eBay, and that worked superb.

As for instructions, follow this page and you'll be fine. I used those instructions and they worked flawlessly.

Marie. If you're not comfortable with the process, I would be willing to do it for a small fee plus the cost of the drive. Visit my site and make contact with me if you're interested. http://www.macworks.biz/
