Where is that external hard drive icon????

Here's my problem/question. I am using Tiger. I have a digital camera and the UBS connector broke a while back - years actually, so I bought a memory card reader and instead of connecting the camera I connect the reader. Before I installed Tiger everything was fine. Now 80% of the time I try to import my new photos I can't get an external harddrive icon to appear on my desktop. The rest of the time I connect it and presto, there it is. I have tried searching for it, but to no avail!

Use Disk Utility to make your pesky external memory card reader wake up:
apps/utilities/disk utility. It should show up as a hard drive in your list.
