MacBook DVI to External Monitor Problem

I have recently bought an Apple mini-dvi to dvi adapter to hookup an external Samsung LCD monitor.

As soon I connect the cable - the Samsung LCD shows an extension of the desktop & then my MacBook freezes. I can't type anything or use the trackpad. The only option I have is to shutdown from the power button. I have tried resetting the PRAM & SMC & even a system re-install (drastic action - I know).

But still exactly the same problem. Even if the LCD is connected while the MacBook is off & boots up - the OS hangs.

Any thoughts? - I really need to use an external screen for my work. Sometimes the 13" internal doesn't cut it!

Thanks in advance.
