Warning about OtherWorldComputing Memory

I want to provide a warning about OtherWorldComputing/MacSales memory upgrades for laptops. I installed a chip in my MacBook Pro. You have to leave a special paper sticker on the chip or else the warranty from OWC is void. Apple later repaired my MacBook Pro and found that the chip was defective. They returned the OWC chip without the sticky label. When I questioned Apple repair they said that such chip stickers frequently fall off because the heat of the laptop dries out the adhesive. And, of course, OWC refuses to reimburse me for the memory upgrade because it lacks this sticker. So, my advice is to avoid memory upgrades that require you keep a stick in your laptop.

My experience has been that some kind of identifying sticker is _always_ needed, and not just with OWC. If the sticker has come off for 'whatever' reason, then a warranty replacement is unlikely, at best.

also note - Apple has a recent history of blaming third party memory for a variety of problems, and the memory is not always the problem, just a convenient fix.

Practically every RAM chip I've ever handled has had a sticker on it. There likely is only 2-3 RAM manufacturers, and everyone buys from them. Stickers are the only way to tell where they came from.

Blame Apple for removing the sticker or blame yourself for not testing the RAM when you bought it, but I can certainly understand OWC's position.
