External HD unmount problems

I have installed an external HD using firewire 400. I partitioned it into two. It works great with the following exception. When I click on one partition in an open-save dialog box one or borh partitions unmount. I then have to go to Disk utility to remount them. Any ideas how to fix this? I am using a
G4 tower with Mac OS 10.5.4.
