| HD size necessary for Time Machine backup?
My iMac has a 500 GB HD; about 100 GB is used. What size external HD is necessary for a Time Machine backup: 100 GB? 500 GB? More?

Equal to or greater than the capacity of the drive you wish to back up. In your case, if you have a 500GB internal drive, you would need a 500GB (or larger) Time Machine drive.
