Updating old Nano

No-one seems to know what the most recent iPod software is (mine is 1.3.1) and the only way I will be able to update it is if it is in Apple format.

I'm stumped how to reformat the storage inside my nano 1 Gen. to Mac format. How do I do this and still have the Nano's OS(?) still alive to make sense of the new format, please?

Will the nano's Update button work on a (Apple) reformatted iPod?

Changing from PC to Mac format on your Nano, means that the memory will be erased, and you will lose everything on your Nano.
Is there anything on that iPod that you want to save?
If not, then plug in to your Mac, let iTunes launch, and choose the Restore button on your iTunes iPod information window. This restore process will change your iPod to a Mac format, and reinstall the iPod software. You will also be updated automatically to the current software version, whatever that is.

The magic word to use is 'Restore', not 'format' or 're-format'! Thanks for that DeltaMac. The restoration is under way as I write... (crosses fingers).

BTW, 1.3.1 IS the current version of the software!!!
