Titainium powerbook only starts on reset- help!!

I have an old Titainium powerbook which I was going to give to a friend to access the internet whilst he is at work, only problem is that it does not seem to want to start. If I press the start button I get a distorted sounding start-up noise then nothing (not even a grey screen) The caps lock light lights up but nothing else.

If I press the re-set button on the back then the power button it starts up fine and works without any problem other than having to re-set the clock and date. I thought it might be a problem with the pram battery so I have just changed this for a new one, but its still the same. The main battery is dead but thats OK as it will be used on the mains adaptor.

Has anybody out there got any ideas?

Hi
Try holding down command-option-p-r keys when it does startup and keep holding for 3 chimes, if it will do that. This zaps the PRAM.
