Need an HD hard drive video camera that works with mac

I've got to do some simple filming for my work and they have told me if I want to purchase an HD camera, that is fine. I was hoping the hard drive video cameras would work seamlessly with a mac and allow me to simply connect them, open the icon that shows up on the computer and copy over to my Mac hard drive, the video file.

I tried my friends Sony HD video camera with a 60 gig hard drive. It did allow me to open it up and see the photos we took with the video camera, but the video files are no where to be seen. I can plug it into a PC and see the file is there because of the size, but it's in some odd format extension I've never seen before. I think it's .mod type.

Is there a hard drive HD video camera out there that is plug and play with a Mac so that I can simply open the file and copy over the video? I have editing software already, I just don't want to wait for the camera to play the content and have my Mac convert it into the format it needs.

Thanks,
John
