'Clunking' hard drive!!

Hi there

Over the last few weeks my hard drive has started to make awful 'clunking' noises. It started out every so often but is getting progressively worse - when i was using toast today it was almost every second, but also happens overnight when nothing is going on. My iMac is only just over 1year old (so out of warranty - perfect timing!!)

Could anyone tell me what the problem is and if it means I need a new drive! I don't use it for any intensive work so I would expect it to last more than a year. If I do need a new drive - any recommendations?

ever tried repairing and then defragmenting your drive with an app like diskwarrior or techtool pro or even drive 10? badly fragmented disks make a lot of noise and are literally wearing themselves out in the process.

never thought of doing that as I thought it sounded like an actual physical problem with the hardware.

Will try drive 10 now
