Can't print on EPSON stylus 810 when classic is launched

Hi ,

I have an EPSON stylus photo 810, I installed it under OSX and it is working fine but as soon as Classic is launched I can't print anymore : I get a "Communication Error" message in the Print Center. Even if I kill Classic I can't even print , I have to reboot OSX in order to print again. I tried several things like restarting cups (killall -HUP cupsd) but it doesn't change anything. I also checked with Gimp print but the problem remains the same. I didn't check If I could print from a classic application but I 'll give a try. I suspect that there is an USB communication problem but I don't know how to reset things without rebooting OSX.

Any Help appreciated,

bruno

Not that this is a fix or anything, but it might rest you a bit. You are enjoying a known problem with epson and classic. Not sure if it affects any other printers, like HP, but it definately buts heads with epson's. I know from personal experience. If you come across any fixes or workarounds for, please post it. It drives me nuts daily.

Later,
Vard

the fix is - you have to install the OS9/Classic installer also. You may be able to do that from classic (or boot to OS 9 and set it up there,- - the best results probably), but you have to use the OS 9 installer, looks like the latest version is 6.7b from the Epson European download site. Once that is installed, you must choose and setup the printer from the Chooser, under the Apple Menu in Classic. the problem is Classic needs to know what printer you have, and will then talk to gimp-print or the standard Print Center, but you'll find that it calls the older OS 9 print manager from Classic

Thanks DM....but does this specifically fix the issue of printing in OSX when classic is running? Or just allow you to print in Classic?

Thanks,
Vard

Here's how it works You have one printer. If you print from OSX through print center, the drivers for that printer need to be available to Print Center (you've already done that) If you print from an app requiring Classic mode, the printing happens through the Print manager (Classic) so the drivers for that printer have to be installed from classic as well (2 installs for the same printer) But to answer your question, No, some printer drivers don't release completely, but a reinstall of both drivers may help (Make sure that your drivers are up-to-date, and reinstall both drivers now), download and use Print Center Repair (from versiontracker) which will fix multiple types of problems with print center. I used to have problems after printing through Classic, but no more (but I have an HP printer) the same thoughts apply with other printers.

Bingo !
I installed the EPSON driver under classic and now everything works fine : printing from OSX while Classic is launched AND Printing from a Classic application. Still I am wondering if it the problem comes from the driver itself or OSX: since printing from OSX while Classic was running didn't work with Gimp Print I suspect that the OSX Print Center is also responsible (unless Gimp Print uses an EPSON driver). Anyway I'll investigate with newer versions of the print center as DM suggested.
