NOO!!! Powerbooks have no L3 cache!

I just noticed something....all the powerbooks (12"-17") have only 512k L2 cache, and NO L3! That makes the 17" about as fast as an iMac! Same processor, same RAM, same cache.....and to think, I was gonna sell my iMac for one.

Is there any huge difference with and without L3 cache? I mean summa summarum

The L3 cache was originally added to make up for the small L2 cache in the 7450 ans 7455 processoers (256 KB). The systems that used the 7400 and 7410 processors didn't have L3 caches. They usually had 1 MB L2 caches.

The new PBs use the 7457 processors which have 512 KB L2 caches (not sure what speed, full speed maybe?)

^if by "full speed" you mean it runs at the processor's speed, then yes, it's full speed.

Simply put, with added L2 cache, no L3 cache is needed. With no L3 cache, prices drop...

My aging G4 with an Encore Dual 500 has a nice fat 2 x 1MB L2 cache (one per CPU) and no L3 so that should be an indication that things are all right...
