Recording audio with a mic via Audio line-in

I have a combination stereo headphone/microphone headset. I'm plugging the two cables (in/out) that come out of the headset into the correct ports on My G5. But the weird thing is, I'm not getting any audio response when I go into System Preferences, or an app like GarageBand. But the weird thing is, if I tab the plastic part of the headset on my desk it will register a little bit on the audio meter. But not when I talk into it. This is confusing.

Could this be that the headset is not compatible, or is there something that I'm doing wrong here?

Have you tried adjusting the "Input volume" in the "Input" tab of the "Sound" pane in System Preferences?

Could it be you are using the line-in instead of the mic plug? Don't know if the G5 has both of them. The difference between line-in and mic plugs is that the mic plug is amplified. Mics tend to have a very low input volume and in your case it sounds like you are using it on the line-in. If there is just one audio-in plug available on your G5 I would suggest to get another headset. Maybe a bluetooth one? They work very fine.

Yeah, I am using the line in port.
There isn't a mic port on my G5.

So I guess my options now are to buy a bluetooth mic (I think my G5 has bluetooth, it has the port for the antenna) or get a different sound card, am I right?

new soundcard will be difficult. Go for the bluetooth headset. You will love it! But before you should really make sure you got bluetooth built-in.
