G5 1.8 sleep/shutdown issue w/Viewsonic P95f+

Out of the box, my brand new G5 1.8 won't work with the Viewsonic P95f+ that I'm using with it. The CPU won't shut down or sleep if the monitor is on. It's like it tries to, but won't. However, if the monitor goes to sleep first, then the CPU will sleep. Also, if I turn on the monitor before I turn on the CPU, the CPU will power up.

Another problem I'm having is with my Superdrive. Sometimes when trying to use iTunes or Toast Titanuim the door won't open or respond and will just sit there with that stupid rainbow-swirling thing. Then I have to force the machine to shutdown to get out of it.

Can anyone help me? I had the problems with the version of OSX that came with the machine and still have them with the recent 10.3.7 update.

Nate

Hi Nate,

I had this same problem with a PixelVision flat panel display. The G5 (happened with my G4 also) would start to go to sleep, then wake up right away. If I tried to shut down it wound up rebooting. What you'd probably have to do is initiate either a shutdown or sleep command, then turn your monitor off. As far as the G5 not powering up with the monitor off, that's by design ... a safety feature, so the video card doesn't get damaged.

As far as your Superdrive goes, try running the Hardware Diagnostic CD that came with your G5. Also, when this occurs take a look in the Console log (/Applications/Utilities/Console) to see if there are any error messages. Hope this helps.

Regards,
Marc
