iPod won't mount anymore

I restored the iPod firmware with 220205 iPod Updater, then transferred the music files from iTunes to the iPod. All this went on w'out a prob. I then unmounted the iPod and disconnected it from the FireWire port. Later, I decided to sync my iPod with my Addr Book and upon connecting the iPod to the same FW port, it did not mount. The iPod is charging, but the OS is not recognising the iPod and iTunes does not open. I've read similar threads in this forum, but none gave a solution. There's a lengthy forum going on HERE and the only solution they've come up with is to use the USB cable instead. That apparently worked for some people. That's not acceptable coz other p'ple have had this same problem with external HD's, burners, etc that may only work thru FW. Another group of people sorted this out by re-installing the OS. That's overkill in my opinion...does anybody know of a proper solution to this pesky problem? Has Apple released any information acknowledging this prob or better yet, suggesting a solution?

Drastic solution

Just found THIS The solution that worked for somebody was to replace the logic board of the iPod with a 3rd Gen iPod logic board.

It sorted itself out, for some reason. I connected the iPod using the USB cable and it was mounted and was able to see it in iTunes. Dismounted and disconnected, then connected it again using the FireWire cable and worked fine. Can't explain it.
