i-pod looks empty but isnīt..

my ipod recently started to act very wierd. it looks like all the playlists/music on it has been erased, it looks empty. but when i connect it to my computer, then i still have only 4G out of 20G left on it. So it looks like the music is still there taking space, even though it wont show.
I wonder if anywone knows what i can do. I have tried to install the latest software but it looks like it does not work to install anything on it (the i-pod icon shows up on my computer when i connect it, but i-tunes does not feel the i-pod and it does not respond to any installation program)is it broken?

Are you on Windows or Mac OS X? Did you try to total-reset the iPod by using the firmware updater not only to update the firmware but to reset it?
