ipod will not restore!

hi all,
i have just got an ipod second hand, all was well, then itunes deleted all the music on there, which im guessing is normal?

but now the ipod wont work, it coes up with the file symbol when you try and turn it on, and also when you try to restore it gets to 2 bars and then says cannot restore??

is this the ipod or the hard drive it self?
will getting a new hard drive sort it?

if not is there any shops i can go to that may be able to sort it?
Cheers Peter

Do you use it with a Mac or a PC?
Can you format the iPod first with Disk Utility (Mac) or with the Windows tools? If that formatting works, maybe the iPod Updater can then add the latest iPod software there without problems.

Is it a PC or Mac iPod? The older ones were made for one platform or the other not both.
