I'm gonna switch....need to convert the pod too

As a long user of the ole crash n burn PC variety i've found myself sitting oogling the macbook pro and i'm pretty sure by store closing time today i'll be tossing this celeron thing out the window... What would be the easiest way to get my 5G 30g almost full ipod formatted into MAC rather from windows?

You would have to get all your tracks into iTunes on the Mac first, then connect the iPod and let the Mac take control over the iPod. Done.

Exactly... if I copy all the files to the ipod for disk use will it work if I transfer that way? I also have a 160gb external hd (used on pc) if I move everything there will I be able to "plug & play" that HD on the macbook or will it need reformatting?

Depends on the format. If that external disk is FAT32: No problem. If it's NTFS, you can read the files on the Mac - but not write to that disk.

The first thing: I'd go with the external disk for that. Copy all songfiles and videofiles etc. from iTunes to that harddrive, import them on the Mac and then connect the iPod and let iTunes handle things (all files will be copied to the iPod again).

Easier still, if you have all the song files on your PC, just back them up to DVD, and use that to transfer them to the Mac.

If the iPod is formatted windows FAT32, i'd leave it that way. HFS+ (mac file format) offers no real benefits for iPod use, where Fat32 offers cross-platform compatibilty for, say, disk use or what not.
