Question iTunes using interal & external drive

Hi all. This is my first post - hopefully it is in the right section. Anyway, I searched a little and couldn't find an answer.

My sister has g4 ibook. She also has an external hard drive.

She wants to store the majority of her music on the external drive, but she also wants to have some music on her internal drive for when she is at school away from her external drive. How can this be accomplished?

Can she install iTunes seperately in the external drive and have that copy point to her ext drive, while the itunes installed on her internal drive would point to the internal drive for songs? (Can this be done ?)

Should she create a seperate user and boot under that depending on which drive she wants to use ? (A highly undesirable option considering her school work)

Also, when we did go in to iTunes preferences and told it to look at her external drive, then if we disconnect the external drive all the songs are still showing in iTunes, but it can't find them when you try to play them. Is there a way to only have it show songs that are actually available?

She is running 10.3.9 with iTunes 6. something I assume.

Any light you can shed would be appreicated.

Simply hold down the option key while starting up iTunes to use multiple libraries
