Videos disappear when I connect ipod to computer

There are times that when I plug in my ipod, all of my videos will be erased but the songs and photos will remain and the ipod image on itunes becomes a drawing of a white ipod instead of the black one, I connect it again and it returns to normal but the videos are still gone and I have to update it again... help!
