My 1st gen shuffle is not recognized

Hi folks,

I've searched through here and haven't found a definitive answer to my ipod woes. My first generation iPod Shuffle is not recognized on my Macbook. It doesn't show up in iTunes, Finder or System Profiler. Apple's Shuffle Reset Utility doesn't see it either. The same is true when I plug it into my Windows PC (not in iTunes, My Computer or Device Manager)

Thing is, it still plays music fine. Through the headphones and through my "itrip" for shuffle (which it plugs into via the usb).

Any ideas, or is my iPod done for?
