How do I partition my 30gb ipod like a external HD?

How can I partition my 5.5Gen iPod 30GB to act as an external HDD? When I click Partition on disk utility I get this message:
"Partition failed with the error:

Invalid argument"

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
