1st gen shuffle not recognized by system profiles not on desktop or itunes

I have a mac 10.4.11 and a 1st gen ipod shuffle. All of a sudden the ipod is not recognized on the desktop nor on itunes by it shows up under the system profiles as being hooked up on a usb port. what do i do? help please!

Have you tried following the instructions to reset the shuffle? I know that on the nano you have to hold the center button and the top of the touch wheel together for a few seconds. Don't know if it's the same procedure for the shuffle. Check the documentation if you have it or check the support page on Apple's website.

Have you tried using another available USB port? If your keyboard has one, don't use that one as sometimes they don't have enough power to drive the USB devices like the iPod (happened to me on an older Mac). You can also try and restore the firmware on it through iTunes once it detects it.
