'How (do) i install updates?', what update(s)? (full name(s) of the 'dmg' or '.pkg' file(s)?)
What version of MacOS X is currently installed on your unknown model Mac?
Where did you download the unknown update file(s) from?

Highlight the file you downloaded, then go to the File Menu to Get Info. Under 'Open With' it should be set to DiskImageMounter. If it's not, use that drop down to select it.

'DiskImageMounter' ('/System/Library/CoreServices/') - true, if MacOS X 10.3 ('Panther') or 10.4 {'Tiger'} is installed; or 'Disk Copy' ('/Applications/Utilities/') if MacOS X 10.2 ('Jaguar') or earlier, is installed.
