I don't know what happened to the sound on my G3 iMac DV Indigo running OS 9.2. I checked system preference under sound and mute was not checked, I tried trashing the sound preference in the System file and still no sound at all from the headphones or the speakers, so I am out of ideas. Any suggestions? I recently upgraded to 9.2 from 9.0.4.

If I recall correctly, The Sound control panel has output and alert sections. Check both. Move the slider to the highest setting and see if you get any results.

Also, does the machine make the "gong" sound when you reboot?

Yes, I've made sure both volume levels were up in sound control. I tried trashing the "Sound Preferences" file and restarting. Also, THERE IS NO "PING" SOUND HEARD AT STARTUP. There is just no sound at all period. I just purchased this computer from someone who wiped the hard disk clean and reinstalled OS 9.2.2 --- any other ideas/suggestions???

On the side of the computer (not the headphone jacks in front), is there something stuck in the sound output/headphone port? A friend of mine had the same problem -- come to realize, the metal portion of the 1/8" miniplug broke off in the hole.

No, nothing in the jack itself....I tried putting in a headphone, but don't get any sound out of the headphones either. I checked system preference under sound and mute was not checked, I tried trashing the sound preference file in the System folder and still no sound at all from the headphones or the speakers, I even rebuilt the desktop and zapped the PRAM using TechTool. Any suggestions? I recently this computer from a gentleman who claimed the sound worked fine for him, but did wipe the hard disk and did a clean install to 9.2.2 Thanks! |
