Dead Imac ?

Grey screen of death ?

Hi,
I have an old PowerPC G3 500 Mhz 128 MB SDRAM Harddrive 30 gig
which seems to be dead. Due to some nostalgic feelings , I still hope someone is able to give me some resurrection-tips.
My magic spells didn't work..

Battery has been changed
Booting from CD (diskwarrior) doesn't work
The command-option NV, SD, Alt-key, ... didn't do a thing
working in OpenFirmware : I do get an USB setup error:5c000000 00001
reset-all, reset-nvram, set-defaults.. and several others don't help me out

Maybe some high-level wizard can help me out of this ?

Tips for recycling an iMac with a dead system can be useful too..

Thanks

wow, try replacing bit by bit, to find the problem, start with the cheapest option.
It sounds like the Hard Disk to me, you may have an arm out, try giving it a very SOFT tap of the corner while it is spinning (that put my Hard Disk arm back in place)
[WARNING I AM NO WIZARD]

Funny, but.. it worked Once...

Then I was back where I was before..

The OS (9) locked when starting up the location manager (showing only the puzzle sign with the questionmarked lightbulb at start-up)

So I tried to reboot with the C-key but got the grey screen back...
more tapping doesn't do the trick anymore..

When I tap too hard I hear annoying clicks, so that's not ok, but probably normal. :s

(ok, so now the new neighbours saw me through the window kicking my computer ) No more tapping

sounds like you need a new hard drive. so until you replace it, you mac will not start.
