Old iMac Modem Not Dialing

I have an old (around 1999) iMac running OS 9.0.4, with an internal modem.

The modem is getting a dial tone but isn't dialing. Is there any way to fix the internal modem or do I need to switch to an external modem? If so, what modem would I need to buy to be compatible with such an old iMac?

Also, is it possible on these old iMacs to upgrade the memory? It's running on only 128 MB RAM and I'd like to up that to 512 or even more if possible.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi;
I would first check the modem control panel and see if the internal modem is checked.If it is ,then more than likely your modem has died. A external modem will be almost impossible to come by.Your best bet would be ebay,look for a external usb one,the new apple usb modems will not work on your Imac.As far as ram goes if you have a Bondi blue Imac ,the ram limit is 384mb.if you have a fruit color then the upper limit is 512mb.Both machines use PC-66 144 pin ram.
Hope this helps!
