MS Word in classic won't print, other classic apps do

Hi,

I like your forum (just found it today).

I recently upgraded to 10.2.8, and no big problems. All of the applications are printing fine. But when we try to print from MS Word 98 (OS9) it brings up Print Monitor and says that the serial port is busy! It's a USB Samsung printer.

I downloaded new drivers for OSX from Samsung, and they installed fine. It seems like OS9 doesn't see the USB printer, but it does see our USB MIDI. Oddly, our classic application Finale prints fine, too.

Thanks for your help in advance! Hope you guys have the magic answer.

Cami

Welcome to the forum !

Go to the File menu>Print setup of MS Word. Double check that you have it set for the USB printer.

clueless

Thanks, Cheryl.

I was mistaken: none of the Classic apps will print. In MS print setup, it says it's printing to the correct printer. When I select the printer in the chooser, it selects it, but when I go back nothing is ever selected. Is that usual?

The print monitor still gives the same response about a serial port being busy. I don't have a clue what to do.

HELP!!

Thank you.

Cami

Desktop Printer Utility doesn't see printer

Could this be the problem, and how can I fix it??

I hope a more specific problem will find some answers!! The printer works with OSX applications, but not with OS 9. Apparently, OS9 doesn't have it configured completely.

I'm trying to hook up a Samsung ML 1210 laser printer via USB. The Desktop Printer Utility doesn't see it, or give me an option to find it. I re-loaded the drivers for OS X and OS 9, but that didn't help....

Thank you thank you for your help (my husband uses this computer for work, and he will be eternally grateful (probably to me, but I in turn to you) if you have the magical response.

Thanks,

Cami

That is the clue. Desktop Printer.

Quit Classic
Go to the Hard drive>System folder OS 9 - it has a 9 on the folder.
Go to Extensions and locate all the Desktop Printer files.
Drag them to the desktop.
Close the Extensions folder and open the Extensions (Disabled) folder.
Drag those files from your desktop to the folder -Extensions (disabled).
Now start up Classic. Go to the chooser and at the same time hold down the option and the apple keys. When you hear the alert sound, release the keys.
The chooser will come up. Select the printer. Make sure you have AppleTalk inactive.
close the chooser and give it a try.

option ctrl chooser worked with HP, not with Samsung ML 1210

Hi Cheryl,

Thank you! Thanks to you, we at least have one printer printing from OS 9. My HP will print with your solution (!!). I still haven't found a way with the Samsung ML 1210, though. However, I found a Finale upgrade for OS X that we didn't know we had, so we are in a workable situation and it's all thanks to your help (and two sleepless nights of mine, but who's counting?).

Cheers,

Cami

I am glad you have things working - partial - but working.

I went to the Samung web site to help and found this:

Certain Samsung PCL printer models are compatible with HP printers.
For example, the ML-4500, ML-1210, ML-1740, ML-1710, ML-5050G, and QL-85G GDI (Graphi Device Interface) printers do not use PCL language.
Therefore they are not compatible with HP printers.
In addition, most Samsung Multi-Function Printers (MFP) are not compatible with HP drivers.
All other Samsung printers however are compatible, and in a network environment, Samsung printers can be drop-in replacements when configured correctly.

Do you have any Epson drivers installed in Classic? Try deleting those, and then give the Samsung a try. To delete any Epson drivers in Classic, go to System folder (with the 9 on it)>Extensions. Use the view by list to get everything in alpha order making it easier to find files and trash any Epson files.

Now, I am not sure why a Samsung would not work with an HP printer installed.
