Lpr Printing In Classic

Wife is using Word 2001 in Classic.

Have HP Laserjet 4P connnected to a DLink 704P router/print server via a parallel port.

Have downloaded latest driver from HP.

Booted into OS 9.

Did full install of HP drivers and utilities.

Selected Laserwriter 8 in Chooser

Ran Desktop Printer Utility & selected PPD & specifed print location & queue specified in DLink user's guide.

Verified the connection to the printer in the Desktop Printer Utility.

Saved the Desktop Printer.

Attempted to print. Status light flashes 4 times and quites w/o printing anything.

Also tried setting up CUPS via the web interface. Got a test print but don't know how to get the classic app to print to it.

Works in OS X

Resorted to installing the "HP Laserjet 4 series, CUPS+Gimp-Print v4.2.5" under OS X (the HP driver did not work) as a LPR printer. Works like a champ, printing text, .tif and .eps files from OS X native apps only.

Workaround for Classic apps is to select Laserwriter 8 in Chooser and print to file from the app (i.e., MS Word). Drag the resulting *.ps file onto the Preview application icon (an OS X app) and print the file from there. A nuisance, but it works.

Anyone that gets OS 9 LPR printing to work, please post a reply.

Thanks.
