Can I switch from 'Rise of Nations' to desktop?

Rise of Nations runs full screen. (In Windows-speak, it acts like a DOS program that takes over the entire screen, hiding Windows.) I'd like to be able to switch from RoN to my desktop without exiting RoN. Pressing cmd-tab doesn't do anything within RoN.

Is there a way to get to the desktop from programs like Rise of Nations without closing the program?

(Incidently, I'm open to suggestions for other games that I may like. My favorites are RoN, Civilization, and Sim City. Would World of Warcraft be up my alley?)
