no list with login Window - only boxes

On my school OSX server we have 3 dozen emacs running tiger and a 10.3.9 sever. Whenever one of the emacs starts up it goes to the login screen with the list of all our students/teachers. However, sometimes after waking up from sleep at the login screen by hitting spacebar (or anykey) an emac will only show a user and pass textfield with no option to go back to the list. I either have to restart the emac or login with admin and back out to get the open directory list back. is there another way around this? please let me know how to get back quickly to the list when no back button is showing.

What version of Tiger are they running? 10.4 10.4.1 10.4.2?
