Excel 2004 problems osx 10.3.9

Some users (osx 10.3.9 using microsoft Office:mac 2004, student and teacher edition.) accessing my mac server (network mounted drive osx 10.3.9) are experiencing problems while working in excel spreadsheets on the server. When trying to print: "error in microsoft excel 2004 encountered a problem and needs to close." The program then close's and the user loose's all entry to that spreadsheet. Even if they saved before the error closure. Sometimes this just happens when the user is updating the spreadsheet.

Is this a conflict between office 2004 and the server? And how do I solve this?
