Panther Server Randomly freezes restarts

We have a Mac OS X Server 10.3.9, 1Ghz G4, 1G Ram that main functions are Filemaker Pro Server, it appears to randomly freeze and restart.

this is a log I pulled up recently. None of our IT consultants seem to be able to pinpoint the problem or want to they are all Windows People at heart.

I'm not looking for a solution just possible reasons why this could be happening to such a stable server.

There can be many reasons for that.

You can have either a hardware problem and/or software problem. It i also interesting to know if there is a fixed interval between the crashes. When it crashes, will it keep crashing or could it take some time (how long) before the next crash. How is the load of the server when crashing.


Check our memory, cpu temperature, harddrive for bad clusters etc.

Also check the software for possible conflicts, check for a firmware update etc.


These are in general the hardest problems to find, what happens before the crash is usual an important piece of information.

I had exactly the same problem. After much hairpulling and googling, I zeroed in on the solution: Change the PRAM battery. That fixed the problem completely.

Well, at least until a year later, after an upgrade to Leopard Server. It's doing it again, and I haven't tested the battery to see if it actually wore down that fast, but you should give the battery a try. Cheap and easy fix.
