Windows Vista machine can't connect..

I have an Xserve and for whatever reason the windows vista (for gaming) machine have can't connect to it. It prompts me to log in, as it should, but never allows me to actually get in. tried a windows XP machine next to it and it works fine. Any ideas?

Which version of Windows Vista do you have that's attempting to connect to the SMB server? There's security changes between Vista and XP in how it will attempt to connect.

I use the most recent version of Vista ultimate and I have the same issues, XP is fine, just not Vista. Trying to connect to G5 tower running osx 10.4.9 server.

For Vista Ultimate, you need to change the Security Policy MSC in three different areas. They include:

Local Security Policy
Security Options
LAN Manager Authentication Level

You'll want to change the default setting from “Send NTLMv2 response only” to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”

That should allow Vista Ultimate to connect to an SMB share from Mac OS X Server.

Hope that helps!

Could be. I don't have a copy of Premium or such here to try it with, but you could try it out and see how it goes. I would think that Vista would be using the same default security settings for connecting to SMB shares. Worth a shot, I'd think it should be viable.
