Software Update recently offered to update my server to 10.5.2. Has anyone done it? Is it worth the effort?

Mac OS X incremental updates offer security updates, bug fixes, and sometimes, new features.

10.5.2 offers some bug fixes and security updates, as well as an option to control the transparency of the menubar. Here's a detailed list of what's updated:

You can grab the combo installer from the Apple website -- I always recommend using the "Combo" updater over the regular, "Delta" updaters, but there's nothing wrong with using a "Delta" updater.

10.5.2 seems to be pretty stable for me, and I would recommend updating.

I will rephrase. What has your experience been with the 10.5.2 server update?

The article I linked to contains information about both the Mac OS X "client" updates as well as the Mac OS X Server updates (specifically, the security issues they address, which is what I deem most important in an update to a "server." You may or may not agree.). Whether an update pertains to the server version or not will be stated above each update like so:

For me, 10.5.2 server is indistinguishable from 10.5.1, apart from a few superfluous changes that really don't affect the overall operation of the server in a very measurable amount, and some security updates that aren't noticeable for everyday users. Even though they're mostly "behind-the-scenes" updates, my recommendation to update from 10.5.0 or 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 as soon as possible stands.

Sorry if I seemed a little testy. I have been hoping that this software update would fix, specifically, the server's software update service, which has been severely broken since the introduction of Leopard.

I have been testy about this subject ever since I called Apple support, within the 90 day "free" support period (now expired), after paying my $500, to complain about the swupd failures. They claimed to know nothing about this issue, although there was and is a lively discussion about it on Apple's web site. There was at least one thread here about it.

So I'll focus my question: If you have updated to server 10.5.2, have you seen any improvement in the software update service?

I don't use the software update service on my 10.5 server, but I do on my 10.4 server. Under 10.4, it works decently enough -- I don't have any fancy configurations, though -- i let it mirror ALL updates from Apple and dole them out to my machines... it's pretty much a "stock" Software Update service.

I understand the frustration about getting information about bug fixes from Apple, though. Apple does have a long-standing policy that they will not discuss or disclose any security/stability/feature issues until the issue itself has been fixed and a patch has been released. So, it's kind of "we won't talk about it until it's not an issue anymore for you."
