Wrong access rights for Leopard Clients to Tiger Server

I've upgraded 5 users in a small marketing dept. from old G4 10.4.9 to new Intel 10.5.2 machines.
They share a 10.4 server but the new machines get wrong access rights when connecting to the server with the APF protocol (files an folders are write protected). If I use the SMB the rights seem allright.
My questions are: What can I do to fix the rights problem (I don't use posix but let new items inherit rights) or is it a big problem using the SMB protocol (speed, ....)?

Thanks in advance
