Illustrator files on Server

Thanks to some info provided from the folks here, I have finally convinced my users that opening an Illiustrator file directly from the server is a no-no. (Well, most of them anyway)

BUT... now I have another problem. I am investigating a user on an Intel Mac Mini crashing when trying to print from Illustrator. Here's the thing. When he boots up (but does NOT log in to any server) then opens Illustrator, he is soon presented with a logon for the XServer. This makes me assume that some of the components in Illustrator are linked to another file on the server, perhaps some fonts?
(The Illustrator scratch disks are set to local drive)
Any way to check this?
