Angry Digital Camera no longer supported....grrrrrrrr

Ok - I have been a very loyal Mac fan and user for many years, weathering many ups and downs. But I am now about to loose my patience with Apple and OS X....

Under OS 9, my Fuji FinePix 1400 mounted on the desktop just fine. All I had to do was drag and drop the .jpg files to my hd to use them - pretty easy.

Then I finally loaded X (10.1) when it came out and wow! plug my camera in and Image Capture launches and akutomatically downloads my pictures just fine. I really liked that!

OS 10.1.1 update comes along - all still working just fine and dandy....

10.1.2 update - suddenly my camera is no longer supported. Apple system profiler correctly identifies it, but the camera no longer mounts on the desktop and Image Capture no longer "sees" the camera. To top it off, the Microtech SmartMedia reader I just purchased works fine for one day with their new drivers - until I update the OS to 10.1.2 - then it's dead as well.

So now, I am no longer able to download my pictures from my camera. I have not yet tried by booting into 9.2.1 - but I shouldn't have to.

I just took a look at the iPhoto page regarding camera compatibility - and would you believe my camera is not listed? Of course not.

I have replaced nearly all of my external hardware for compatibility with OS X in just the last few months:

Printer -my Epson 850 was not and isn't planned to be supported under X

Scanner - My UMAX was a piece of junk anyway, but would not work at all under X (again, no planned driver - and didn't work worth a flip in Classic)

CD burner - my original burner wasn't recognized under X(Yamaha 8424 S was scsi - my Orange Micro card is still not supported under X).

What's really strange is OS X still recognizes my Teac external floppy drive!

Now am I to have to buy a new camera as well, just to be able to do what I was able to do before the latest 10.1.2 update?

I am afraid I am getting close to the end of my rope with Apple. I just wish I could stand to use Windows - ouch....

you have issues

Perhaps your name should be The Bitterman. Though you have been pulling the short stick out of every hand. The camera, and smart media should come up to speed in the near future. The printer is probably dead. CD burner ... I'm still waiting for Adaptec/Roxio to de something meaningful.

Scanners ... there's a third party app that works pretty well. Shareware you can grab off of version tracker. That used my scsi Umax Astra just fine, and was a generally better tool than the Umax supplied stuff. I just got cheap and didn't want to pay the fee, so I employed my scanner and CD burner (Yamaha Scsi) on a dedicated 9 box sitting beside my main box. Box cost me nothing to run, software cost money. I'm broke. That's what happened.

If we want the Apple market to have a rich third party app set, we have to start looking to people other than Apple to provide us with stuff. And waving money in their faces. This is how business moves. Don't follow, lead.

But yeah, the support for those things is weak, and SOMEBODY needs to bring it up to par.

Short end of stick...

You could say I came up on the short end of the stick...Some of it is acceptable in the expectations of "bigger/better/Newer/Faster". I knew the printer was a no win situation, as UMAX themselves publicly said that they would no longer support it - no X driver.

I didn't mind too much needing a new burner,as it was an excuse to buy a faster model (firewire). I certainly would rather have spent the money elsewhere, but oh well..

The scanner - I know the sofware you are referring to. It's calle ViewScan by Hammerik sofware (or something like that). Unfortunatly, it doesn't look like ViewScan supports ANY UMAX USB scanners.

I am just frustrated that my media reader AND my camera are suddenly incompatible with OS X, despite the fact that my camera was compatible directly with X before the update.....

Did this get fixed under 10.1.3 or 10.1.4?

I hear 10.1.5 and 10.2 will support more stuff. Don't give up yet.

hopes waxing and waning

I hope the finder will get faster. The OS is fast enough for me in general, but the finder ... isn't fast, hangs on stupid things, won't let me open a window mid connection to a server. It's just dumb, and carbonesque.

I hope I'll be able to play DVD's on my PCI video card again, as that's my card with TV out. I could in X.1.2 ... poof, suddenly my hardware configuration is not supported.

It also has TV in, but not in X, I'd like TV in again. I'd like some more PCI video cards out there too, since I have 2 monitors that I use, and not 2 AGP slots.

I want SoundJam's abilities back, in X. If I set my clock back to before the SoundJam X beta expired, I had some of that. iTunes is cool, but my license for SoundJam had a reason. Or an mp3 compressor within QT. That'd work too. Hell, I'd settle for ogg, but I miss SoundJam. (moment of silence)

I hope this version comes with a defrag utility. One that can run continuously in the background would be superb, but any defrag utility would be appreciated.

I wish it was going to be cooler here tomorrow, I had planned on wearing a celebratory outfit of jeans and a black turtleneck. Oh well, celebrating Mac gatherings in spirit, as usual.
