I'm new to OS X: TCP/IP dial-up Script & modem sound control, Please Help

To help with suggestions, I am using an Indigo 366 MHz iBook, with one firewire, one usb and 320 MB of RAM.

Here is my problem:

I am dialing into a local university with my mac and am required to log-in using a terminal window. I start out by having the TCP/IP program dial up and esablish a connection. Then I have the program open a terminal window (via the check-box in the modems/network control panel). When this window opens, I first press return, then enter my username, press return, enter my password, press return, then enter: connect ppp, and press return one last time. Then the window closes and the mac completes the internet connection.

In OS 9, I could do this once and have the TCP/IP monitor my actions, then whenever I would connect, it would execute this script for me. I much prefer this ability, being able to connect with only one action.

Does anyone know how to accomplish this in Mac OS X. I am not very familiar with the OS X or Unix, or scripting for that matter. If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate your suggestions.

Also, I have noticed that I am no-longer able to hear my modem's dial-up and connection sounds. I know that this is typically annoying, but I like being able to hear what is going on. All other sounds work, and I checked the box that enables modem sound. Anyone have any suggestions.

Another sound related item is in Outlook express and Netscape's e-mail program's. I had OS 9 set to play a sound both when it checked the e-mail and when it received a new message. Under OS X, I can only get it to play a sound when a new message arrives. Does anyone know how to change this.

Speaking of Outlook Express, does the OS X version not include a newsgroup browser? If it is still there how do I activate it?

I apologize for having so many questions, but this OS X thing has blown my mind, I would greatly appreciate any information which can be offerred.

Okay, just to fill in some blanks here:

Modem sound is turned on by going into System Preferences, then Network. Select your setup and pick the Modem tab. There is a sound on/off radio button ... this is set separately for each location.

Under the PPP tab is a button for PPP options, and in here is a checkbox for "connect using terminal". I have never had to use this, but I think that might be half your problem solved.

On my Cube, turning the modem sound option on doest not work. I have never heard the modem sounds in OS X, and that option has been turned on since day 1. Also, symphonix: Hunters said he figured out how to connect with a terminal, he just wants to only have to do that once and record everything he does, and have the computer automatically do the terminal stuff without his intervention every following time he connects. I don't know how to do that, but I am sure someone else can and will help.

Sound like you are using Mac OSX 10.0 There was no sound for modem in the initial release.

I strongly recommend you upgrade to 10.1.3 (there was a 10.1 cd) System performance was greatly improved and the modem sound was fixed.

I am using OS X version 10.1.3 (Retail) I purchased it in the box a couple of days ago. I just spoke with Apple Computer today, the tech support guy conferred with another while I was on hold for about 15 minutes, they came up with "I don't know, maybe it'll work in the next revision" Can't say they were very helpful.

Anyway, I'm still open to suggestions.
