    Help! My Tibook died!

I have OS X running on my PowerBook G4. I cannot access the computer after startup. The screen shows: "panic: We are hanging here"; and the screen just freezes.

The Darwin Kernel is Version 5.3; this was also shown on the screen.

Any idea how I can retrieve information from my computer?

    Anything, anything?

    Thank you in advance!

Boot the Powerbook from your OS 9 CD and backup your data. Then use Disk First Aid to make sure the hard drive is OK.

To try and salvage your computer, you can then boot from your OS X CD, and re-install OS X on top of everything (without erasing). Make sure to go through all the software updates again, before using the computer. If this doesn't work (or if you don't mind starting over) you can erase the hard drive, and then re-install OS X.

How did this all start? Did you install a particular beta driver?

    Would it be worth ...

... trying to boot in single-user mode (holding down apple-s at startup) to see if you get any further that way?

(Before doing any of the disk-erasing stuff, I mean )
