This is just a guess, but maybe try dragging the OS 9 system folder from the CD to the Hard Drive that has OS X, then run the firmware updater?
Hi...
I set up OS X on a G3.. I want to install OS 9 on it as well,
but it tells me that the G3's firmware is out of date..
so.. I got the firmware... but it requires OS 9 to run it..
I booted from the OS 9 cd and it tells me that the firmware must be able to copy itself to an unlocked system folder..
but since I can't install OS 9 without the firmware... I'm stuck...
Is there a way to upgrade G3 firmware from within OS X without running classic.. ??
the only firmware upgrader I've found won't run under OS X.
Thanks))

the mac couldn't boot from the system folder that was copied over from the cd..
which i expected..
but it was worth a try.

if you have another hard drive lying around or even in another machine, pop that in place of your current drive, do the update, then switch drives. That's all I have, sorry![]()
