NETWORK PROBLEMS and software update

NETWORK PROBLEMS and software update

In System Preferences, I cannot open up Network! It freezes not letting me see anything at all in the window. Also, software update says that there is no internet connection, when I AM on the net. I have a lan connection at a school.
Ideas?
