avi sound in quicktime

This has probably already been brought up, but I couldn't find an answer yet that helps...
I'm trying to play .avi files that are fine in windows, but when I open them in quicktime player, there's no sound, just video. there's a blip at the very beginning, then silence for the rest. I can extract the audio file to mp3 format. I downloaded divx tool, converted the original file using the avi->mac avi option, and now the reverse happens. There's one frame of video at the beginning, and only the audio works for the rest.
Any ideas? I've got a powerbook g3

I'd suggest using the 3ivx Divx decoder, available at www.3ivx.com, and then you can use DivX Doctor II 2.1 to fix the file so that it plays correctly (available from the same website). You should probably install both version 3.5 of the decoder as well as version 4 PR1.
