Equivalent of OS9's "Remote Access Preferences" in OSX ?

After 2 kernel panics (relating in part I believe to PPPGenie 1.0.0b3 - a useful utility that adds a useful 'time connected' bar next to the modem status icon in the menu bar) I lost ALL my (many) ISP 'Locations' on rebooting. In OS9 I used to back up the "Remote Access Preferences" file (located in the preferences/Remote Access Folder) so that I never had to retype all those various usernames, passwords and phone numbers ever again. This also proved useful when migrating to a new machine as I'd simply dump the backup file into the Remote Access preferences folder.

Does anyone know how to locate and duplicate the relevant OSX file for backup purposes ?

I read somehere that an invisible OSX file called "preferences.xml" may be the file I'm looking for, but if it is, I haven't worked out how to duplicate it and test it will correctly reinstate Location / Network preferences whenever required

(path… /private/var/db/SystemConfiguration/preferences.xml - made visible by Tinkertool)

I think I need to log on as Root to copy/move/delete this file but need to work out how to do that first (still learning!)

If anyone knows that this will work, please advise.
