can't see my cd's or disk images....please help

hi.... i have a problem that started this morning:: when I insert a cd or mount a disk image, it doesn't show up. it's set up in the preferences to show up, but it's not on the desktop or finder windows. Any clues as to what this is?? i tried just restarting but no luck. it works fine in 9...
What happens in X is that if I insert a blank cd, it asks if I want to initialize and name it, which is normal......but then it just never shows up. Or if I try to mount a dmg it goes thru it's routine but then never shows up..... if I try again to mount that same dmg, it says it can't because it's already mounted, but it it's not!

thanks,
rev
