Shrinking Displays Preference Pane

Hi all,

a friend of mine has a strange problem with the displays preference pane on her PowerMac G4 running 10.3.9.
When she clicks the displays preference icon the pref pane shrinks to the favourite pref panes bar at the top. No error message, no display prefs pane.
Has anybody else encountered such a problem and knows a fix?

(We already deleted the appropriate plist file as well as com.apple.preferencepanes.cache and replaced the pref pane itself with no effect. She has the Apple standard Ge Force 2MX video card installed)
