DNS settings OSX (server)

Someony told me that the DNS settings are wrong at OSX (a UNIX problem he says)
Is this true, and do i have to correct this with a text-editor??
The problem is, i don't understand what and where i have to change this settings.
Our Network is verry slow and this guy told me that incorrect DNS settings on Unix systems are the couse of this problem.
