Mount share and Volumes folder opens

Is this supposed to happen: I mount a networked volume via tcp/ip in OS 10.2.1 and the share shows up on the desktop (which of course is normal) but then the invisible /Volumes folder window opens with an alias of the shared volume(s) in it. Mounting an AppleTalk volume does not cause the /Volumes folder window to open.

Pretty sure this is not supposed to happen. Any ideas? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if it's supposed to or not but it happens to me as well when I am mounting any remote volumes. My guess is that it's supposed to happen.

Just got off the phone with Apple tech support and it is indeed normal now in 10.2.x for the /Volumes folder to open with a remote volume is open.

I thought it was strange not only because this is a new feature but because the /Volumes folder is not write protected and anything can be moved into that folder only to "disappear" until the system opens it again when the next remote volume is mounted.

Tech support made a note on that and hopefully Apple will fix that.

Does anyone know of a way to turn off this feature? I find it quite irritating...
