Permissions Problem

In moving from my old Powerbook to my new one, I have a couple of problems that I think are permissions related.

1. Saving downloads to the desktop does not work. When I try to drag something to the Desktop it won't work and tells me that "The item cannot be moved because Desktop cannot be modified". I can see my desktop folder under my user account though.

2. Trying to do a Spotlight search in a Finder window, the I-beam will place in the search box, but will not allow me to type anything in it. It works fine when I try to search in System Preferences or Mail.

I have run the permissions repair in Disk Utility to no avail.

Suggestions please?

never mind - it was two corrupted preference files.
